Our mission is to provide holistic support for cancer patients, enhance educational opportunities for underprivileged children—especially those from migrant worker and Adivasi communities in Maharashtra—and drive sustainable rural development in West Bengal to uplift and empower communities.
Our Journey
This journey began back in 2008, when my mother, Mrs. Maya Sarkar, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She was under treatment with some of the best doctors in the country at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. For nine months, she had to go through multiple sessions of chemotherapy, radiation, and a mastectomy surgery. During this period, I learned a lot about this disease and how important it is to have a good support system or a volunteer to guide us through the various steps. I also realized that there was a language barrier for a lot of patients visiting from West Bengal, since unfortunately, they were not that fluent in Hindi. I grew up in West Bengal and have lived in Mumbai for almost 30 years now, so I was well-versed in both. Later that year, my mother recovered from Cancer and this inspired me to give something back as an appreciation gesture.
About 8 years later, my mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer for the second time. During her illness, she made me promise that I would definitely, work on the idea of helping other patients through this difficult time and provide support to the patients and their families. Unfortunately, we lost her in 2018, and as a homage to my mother, Maya Charitable Trust was established, to support Cancer patients and underprivileged kids.
